Severe turmoil ahead as new road gets green light
The regional transport ministry has given the green
light to the plans to build the next part of the Icod
to Santiago del Teide missing link in the island ring
road.
The latest stretch, between Icod and El Tanque will
cost 165 million euros and will be two years in the
making.
The new road will skirt Buen Paso, pass between Santa
Bárbara and El Lomo Blanco and cross the higher
reaches of the municipalities of Icod where, in the
area of Amparo, a village called El Pie de las Lajas
will, according to the planners, be affected
by the work.
A list of so-called false tunnels gives
some indication of the scale of the scheme. In the
Icod valley the road will have no less than eight
of them and in addition there will be two huge viaducts.
The tunnel planned for La Vega will be 1,200 metres
long.
Conservationists who have been fighting the scheme
tooth and nail will give little credence to a statement
issued by the regional transport ministry which said
the road will have no urban impact because the design
takes into account the environment, traffic circulation
and flow and socio-economic factors.
